FAQ

Got questions about the Ole Miss Nanoengineering Summer REU Program? We’ve got answers.

Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelor's degree.

No! Nanoengineering is interdisciplinary, and students majoring in any STEM field are eligible.

Yes. Community college students who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply.

No. Prior research experience is not required.

No. The program is open to rising sophomores through rising seniors.

We are looking for students with a genuine interest in research. Strong applicants demonstrate curiosity, motivation, and a desire to gain hands-on research experience. This program is best suited for students considering a future in research or graduate studies. It is not intended for students solely pursuing medical school, unless they are considering an MD/PhD path.

February 15 each year.

First-round offers are typically made in early March. A waitlist is maintained in case any offers are declined.

The program runs for 10 weeks beginning with move-in on the Tuesday after Memorial Day and concluding during the first week of August.

Yes. Starting in 2026, participants will receive a $7,000 stipend.

Yes. On-campus housing is provided in contemporary or apartment-style residence halls.

Yes. Travel to and from the REU site can be reimbursed up to $500 total.

Yes. Participants will present a research poster at the Mississippi IDeA/EPSCoR conference during the summer and give an oral presentation at the end of the REU program.

No. The REU is a full-time research experience and requires full participation.

No. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible.

Yes. Students who were not selected in a previous year are welcome to reapply.

Yes, you can apply. However, per NSF guidelines, the majority of participants should come from institutions other than the host site. University of Mississippi students are encouraged to seek out research opportunities directly with UM faculty during the summer.
