Engineering Research and Impact
At Ole Miss Engineering, research isn’t just about discovery—it’s about creating solutions that drive progress in industry, health, security, and the environment.

Engineering Research That Makes an Impact

Advanced Manufacturing and Materials
We aim to enhance manufacturing processes and materials to be more cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. For instance, our collaborations include using machine learning to optimize manufacturing at Nissan and employing additive manufacturing techniques to enable in-space repairs for NASA spacecraft.

Complex Computation and Multiscale Modeling
Our research develops systems capable of analyzing and extrapolating data from extensive datasets. Applications range from detecting enemy missiles and aircraft to modeling floodwater spread during dam or levee breaches. We also explore methods to derive insights from massive data, such as enhancing medical image analysis and improving Wi-Fi location services.

Innovative Health Technologies
We adopt a holistic approach to human health by examining external influences and internal bodily functions. Our initiatives include screening water for lead in Mississippi Delta schools and child care facilities, investigating the molecular causes of heart disease, and developing biomaterials to boost immune responses against cancer and other diseases.

Sustainable Environment and Infrastructure
Our research enhances understanding of environmental and geological systems to predict and mitigate impacts from climate change and economic development. Projects include using ground-penetrating radar to assess fault lines beneath national landmarks in Washington, D.C., and creating tools to prioritize maintenance for Mississippi's highways and bridges.
