Amir Molan Named Mississippi Engineer of the Year
Assistant Professor of Engineering Honored by ASCE
OXFORD, Miss. – Amir Molan, assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of Mississippi, has been named Engineer of the Year by the Mississippi section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Molan has authored 56 peer-reviewed publications, including 45 journal articles and 11 conference papers, in prestigious venues such as the Transportation Research Record (TRR), ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering, and Accident Analysis & Prevention. He has served as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on 10 research projects funded by NCHRP, state DOTs and UTCs, securing over $2.6 million in research funding.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award from the ASCE Mississippi Section,” Molan said. “I am especially grateful because the selection was made by some of the most respected civil engineers in our state. I would also like to acknowledge my graduate and undergraduate students in our Transportation Research Group (TRG) and our research collaborators. This recognition would not have been possible without them.”
Molan’s research has been widely recognized, including the 2025 Junior Faculty Research Award for the School of Engineering. In 2023, Molan earned the Epps/Dart Award from the Deep South Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The year prior, he was honored with the most cited article of 2022 by the International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology. In 2018, he was awarded Best Paper in the ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering.
"On behalf of the Mississippi section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, we extend our congratulations to Dr. Amir Molan on being named the section Engineer of the Year,” said ASCE MS Section President Will Carruth. “This prestigious honor is a testament to his extraordinary innovative contributions, and dedication to advancing the field of civil engineering. His work continues to inspire excellence for his students and the profession."
“Molan’s passion for impactful research and his exceptional contributions to the civil engineering profession exceed his peers. This recognition comes as no surprise to me,” said Dr. Srinivas Pulugurtha, chair and professor of civil engineering at Ole Miss.
Molan’s research focuses on innovative solutions and data-driven strategies to improve the safety and performance of transportation systems for all users. Key areas of interest include innovative intersections, multimodal mobility optimization, and preparing transportation systems for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs).
Molan has served as an assistant professor of civil engineering at Ole Miss since 2021. Prior to coming to Oxford, Molan held academic positions as a Lecturer at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly–San Luis Obispo), a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Wyoming (UW), a Research Associate at Michigan State University (MSU), and an Instructor/Graduate Assistant at Wayne State University (WSU).
