Dear Engineering Alumni,

Many changes are coming to the Ole Miss School of Engineering. In addition to renovating many of our buildings, we are working to improve our brand so we can be better reflected as the successful, modern School of Engineering that we are.

As part of that initiative, the Ole Miss Engineer newsletter is continuing to evolve. In August, Ole Miss Engineer will be published as a glossy, annual magazine for the first time. Additionally, this monthly e-mail communication will serve to keep you informed of what’s happening on campus and among our alums.

We want you to be an active part of this progress. Please stay in touch.

As part of its community service and outreach efforts, Ole Miss engineering students hosted more than 50 high-school students from around the state Feb. 26 for the annual Engineering Day competition. Students were challenged with designing and constructing model water towers that could withstand increasingly stronger and longer tremors on the “shake table”—an earthquake simulator.

In addition to introducing high-school students to the field, Engineering Day gave them a peek inside the Ole Miss School of Engineering and a chance to meet current students. To read more about the event, visit http://news.olemiss.edu/water-towers/.

The spring Ole Miss Engineering Advisory Board meeting will be held April 8-9. The board will spend April 8 working in department-specific committees focused on ways to improve the engineering curriculum, enhance student affairs, increase interaction with industry and government, guarantee continued ABET accreditation and more. The weekend will also offer an opportunity to see the renovations to the engineering complex, including the soon-to-be-opened Old Chem. Activities will be suspended April 9 for Chancellor Dan Jones’ formal inauguration, to be held at 10 a.m. at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. For more information on the inauguration, visit www.olemiss.edu/depts/chancellor/inauguration.

Additionally, the annual Engineering Awards Banquet will be held April 15 at the Inn at Ole Miss. The event will honor outstanding faculty members, outstanding seniors and the 2010 Engineer of Distinction, Dr. George Flinn (BSEE 65). To register to attend, visit www.olemissalumni.com/events or contact Lynda Walker in the Alumni Office at 662-915-7375.
