EE Department News Bytes (Fall 2009)

  • Dr. Fan Yang, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, has been selected to receive the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society 2009 Donald G. Dudley, Jr. Undergraduate Teaching Award. The award recognizes outstanding and original contributions to undergraduate education.

  • Drs. Fan Yang and Atef Elsherbeni, Associate Dean and Professor of Electrical Engineering, received a NASA EPSCoR grant on “Reconfigurable Antennas and Reflectarrays for NASA Space Science Missions.” The total grant amount is $750,000 and will support the research at University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University as well as the administration of the NASA Mississippi Space Grant office.

  • Dr. Atef Elsherbeni recently gave an invited talk entitled “GPU Accelerations of Electromagnetics Simulations” at the Institute of High Performance Computing, A*Star, Singapore.

  • Dr. Lei Cao, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, was selected to serve on the editorial board of a new journal Recent Patents on Signal Processing

  • Dr. Lei Cao is a technical program committee member for the symposium of wireless communications in IEEE Globecom 2009

  • Dr. Lei Cao was a summer visiting professor to The University of Southern Queensland, Australia and gave a presentation entitled “Multimedia wireless communications with cross-layer design” to its Faculty of Engineering and Survey.

  • Dr. Alexander Yakovlev, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, served co-chair of two technical sessions at the IEEE AP-S International Symposium, Charleston, SC, held in June 2009. One session was on “Ultra Wide Band Systems” and the other was on “Cavity and Aperture Coupling ”

  • Dr. Alexander Yakovlev served as a reviewer for the Third International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics - Metamaterials 2009, held in London, UK, in September 2009.

  • Dr. Alexander Yakovlev was a Visiting Professor at the University of Rennes, IETR, Rennes, France, during May 2009 where he also made an invited presentation entitled “Homogenization Models for Metamaterials.”

  • Dr. Alexander Yakovlev served as an external member of the Dissertation Committee of Mr. T. H. Wu at the University of Rennes, Rennes, France in May 2009.

  • Professor Abbas Omar, Director of the Chair of Microwave and Communication Engineering, University of Magdeburg, Germany visited in the department last May and presented two seminars entitled “A Novel Multimodal Technique for the Unique and Simultaneous Determination of Material Permittivity and Permeability” and “Overview on the Fundamentals of Magnetic-Resonance Imaging (MRI).”

  • Professor Veysel Demir from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Northern Illinois University visited in the department in July and presented a seminar entitled “Presentation of an Electromagnetic Analysis Software Package Based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) Method.” Professor Demir worked as a visiting research scholar in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Mississippi from 2004 to 2007 and is coauthor of a book on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method with Dr. Atef Elsherbeni, Professor of Electrical Engineering.

  • Dr. Kazem F. Sabet of EMAG Technologies, Inc. visited in the EE Department in July and presented a seminar entitled “EM.CUBE(R): Electromagnetic Modules - A Collaborative Userware and Benchmarking Environment.”
