Why Chemical Engineering?

I like to tell people “It's a great time to be a chemical engineer.” Whether your interest is in the petrochemical industries, energy, medical school, food manufacturing, materials, sustainability, cutting-edge research in many areas, intellectual property law, manufacturing, personal care products, or any of a huge variety of fields, chemical engineering is a great pathway to get you there1. A chemical engineering degree from Ole Miss will provide you with the technical, problem solving, communication and teamwork skills that nearly every company is looking for.

Why Chemical Engineering at Ole Miss?

I also like to tell people that any chemical engineering program will provide you with the technical aspects of an engineering education. And if you believe “bigger is better”, then there are other programs out there for you.

But…

  • If you want to be a name, not a number;
  • If you want a program that is truly interested in helping you get where you want to go, not where they want you to go;
  • If you want a program that sincerely wants you to succeed and not one that is trying to “weed you out”;
  • If you want a program that makes sure you have the “soft skills” that companies are looking for;
  • If you want opportunities for leadership, service, research in a variety of fields, and a wide variety of campus activities on one of the prettiest campuses in the SEC,
  • If, in addition to chemical engineering, you want to be part of one of the top three honor’s colleges in the nation, or part of a one-of-a-kind Center for Manufacturing Excellence, or the Lott Leadership Institute, or the Croft Institute for International Studies, or a Chinese Language Flagship Program… in other words, if you want to be EVEN MORE than “just”2 a chemical engineer;

...then you need to consider Chemical Engineering at Ole Miss.

Our faculty truly care about our undergraduate students. We are here to help you figure out what you want to do “when you grow up”. We are all committed to excellence in the classroom. We have an open door policy which means that we are more likely to be accessible to you when you need us. Many of our students also participate in a number of the excellent programs provided by The University of Mississippi.

Should you have any questions or just want to talk, let me know. Better yet, if you are not familiar with Ole Miss, come see for yourself. Visit when classes are in full swing, and you can sit in on a class and speak face-to-face with our students. See for yourself the amazing experience that is Ole Miss Chemical Engineering.

  1. There are some great web pages that can tell you more about it:
  2. Not that there is anything wrong with being “just” a chemical engineer. Many of our most successful alumni “only” got their chemical engineering degree.
